We reached a major milestone for the lab - being awarded an R01 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences! The lab worked so hard to pull this grant together and we are excited to see where our discoveries about stem cells lead us. We celebrated by going on a gorgeous fall hike at Treman State Park. We even saw each other's faces in person for the first time in many months. |

It's a time of great change in the lab. We are thrilled to welcome Kuang-Tse Wang, a student from the GGD graduate program, to the lab for his thesis research! Two seniors have virtually graduated: Allison Chang, a nutrition major, will go on to pursue a masters in Nutrition here at Cornell (and hopefully we'll see her when she returns to Ithaca for a Masters program!). Lydia Zamidar, a Biological Sciences major, will work as a technician in Brian Kim's laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis! Congratulations to everyone for making progress during these challenging times.

Divya Shiroor's paper is available online at Current Biology! This is the first installment of her project, in which she discovers that injury interferes with radiation-induced cell death. She created an amazing video to accompany it, as an explainer, featuring adorable hand-drawn cartoons. This is a very exciting week for the Adler lab!

Tisha Bohr releases a preprint of her postdoctoral work! In this fantastic paper, she asks whether planarian stem cells can sense the identity of missing organs. Short answer: depending on which organs are removed, stem cells behave differently! This begins to answer the question of how stem cells 'know' what to regenerate.

Welcome to GGD rotation student Kuang-Tse Wang. His rotation, during the COVID-19 shutdown, is bound to be an adventure for all of us.
January 5, 2020
Welcome to BMCB rotation student Jacob Odell!
November 16, 2019
Divya Shiroor (Adler lab grad student) will be the keynote speaker at DBNY (Developmental Biology New York) on November 16 at Ithaca College. DBNY is the first conference focused on undergraduate research in upstate New York and is organized by Ithaca College Biology faculty Te-Wen Lo and Ian Woods. Hopefully this will be the first of many conferences held at IC.

We have had a great time teaching in the MBL Neurobiology course! Graduate student Divya Shiroor TA'ed and oversaw an exciting project dissecting feeding behavior as part of the Functional Genomics section of this intensive course for training graduate students and postdocs from all over the world.
July 1, 2019
Big week! Divya Shiroor's exciting paper describing a new injury-induced stem cell behavior (sneak peek, stem cells do more than just proliferate in response to injury) is available as a preprint! This is a big moment for the lab too, since it's our first preprint!
Also, Carrie was awarded a grant from the President's Council for Cornell Women! Thank you very much for your support of our work.
