Carrie visits AP Biology classes at Ithaca High School
September 2024 AP Biology teachers at Ithaca High School kicked off the year by doing RNAi in planarians. Students knocked down different genes and observed their phenotypes. Carrie visited the classes and answered many questions about planarian biology, medical relevance of studying stem cells, and regeneration. Thank you so much to Mr. Higgins and Ms. Jewett for making this happen! As a bonus, Carrie was interviewed for the Ithaca High School paper, The Tattler. |
Our worms feed on local, grass-fed, sustainable cow liver
May 2024
We just realized that the farm where we get the liver that feeds our worms has a VERY popular YouTube channel! Peter Larson from Just a Few Acres farm, in Lansing New York, produces amazing videos about farm life. Check out these amazingly well-behaved cows (click on the cow pic).

Biology of Aging course
July 2023 We had an INCREDIBLE experience participating in the inaugural Biology of Aging course at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. We spent two weeks working with Isabella Palazzo and Filippo Conca, immersing ourselves in the diverse field of aging biology. Also huge thanks to the Woods Hole Market for the free sample of ground beef, which the worms enjoyed immensely (on the screen behind us)! Check out this cool article in the Boston Globe written by Carey Goldberg that describes the magic of this course. |
Congratulations to Isabel and Kuang-Tse!
July 2023
Isabel passed her A exam and learned the most important life lesson: how to open a bottle of champagne.
Kuang-Tse was awarded a fellowship from Taiwan's Ministry of Education! We are lucky to have such motivated students in the lab.

Bye Brendan and congratulations on a successful undergraduate career!
May 25, 2023 We bid a fond farewell to Brendan Little, who is graduating in 2023. Brendan has been the sole caretaker of our planarian colony for two years while at the same time doing a ton of experiments. He has been an integral part of our lab and we are especially sad to see him go. The worms will miss his music! He got some cool souvenirs to remember his old friends. |
Congratulations to Kuang-Tse on his fellowship!
April 25, 2023
Kuang-Tse was awarded a 1-year fellowship from Cornell's Stem Cell Program. We are grateful to be part of this vibrant community.

Developmental Biology New York (DBNY) Conference @ Ithaca College
November 5, 2022 Current undergrad Brendan Little presented a posted on his project and WON one of the top poster awards! And former undergrad Elif Magemizoglu, currently a graduate student in Shai Shaham's lab at Rockefeller, gave a keynote presentation! Fantastic trainees make this PI very proud! |
Divya Shiroor, PhD
December 14, 2021 Divya Shiroor, the brave pioneer who was the first student to join the Adler lab in 2016, passed her thesis defense with flying colors, after a very successful and productive PhD! Divya will relocate to San Francisco to work at Loyal, combining her expertise in stem cells with her passion for furries. We can't imagine the lab functioning without her and will miss her dearly. |

Goodbye Tish!
June 2021 It's the end of an era: Postdoc Tisha Bohr is leaving the lab. We will greatly miss having her insight and experience in the lab, but are very excited to see what she accomplishes at Ovid Research, back in the Bay Area! We celebrated with a goodbye party at the Finger Lakes Cider House. |
Congratulations to Jackie and Lourdes on graduation!
May 2021 Two of our undergraduates – Jackie Han and Lourdes Pajuelo – are graduating this year. While we are devastated to see them go, they are on to bigger and better things: Jackie will be a Clinical Research Coordinator at Mass General Hospital and Lourdes is enrolling in Harvard's PREP program! We are so proud of what you have accomplished here at Cornell, and wish you both the best of luck in your future!!! |
R01 from NIGMS!!!!
October 2020 We reached a major milestone for the lab - being awarded an R01 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences! The lab worked so hard to pull this grant together and we are excited to see where our discoveries about stem cells lead us. We celebrated by going on a gorgeous fall hike at Treman State Park. We even saw each other's faces in person for the first time in many months. |
Welcome to GGD student Kuang-Tse Wang and congrats on (remote) graduation to Allison and Lydia!
June 2020
It's a time of great change in the lab. We are thrilled to welcome Kuang-Tse Wang, a student from the GGD graduate program, to the lab for his thesis research! Two seniors have virtually graduated: Allison Chang, a nutrition major, will go on to pursue a masters in Nutrition here at Cornell (and hopefully we'll see her when she returns to Ithaca for a Masters program!). Lydia Zamidar, a Biological Sciences major, will work as a technician in Brian Kim's laboratory at Washington University in St. Louis! Congratulations to everyone for making progress during these challenging times.
Divya's paper published in Current Biology!!!!
May 2020
Divya Shiroor's paper is available online at Current Biology! This is the first installment of her project, in which she discovers that injury interferes with radiation-induced cell death. She created an amazing video to accompany it, as an explainer, featuring adorable hand-drawn cartoons. This is a very exciting week for the Adler lab!
Tisha's preprint released on BioRxiv
May 2020
Tisha Bohr releases a preprint of her postdoctoral work! In this fantastic paper, she asks whether planarian stem cells can sense the identity of missing organs. Short answer: depending on which organs are removed, stem cells behave differently! This begins to answer the question of how stem cells 'know' what to regenerate.
Kuang-Tse Wang from GGD begins his rotation
March 2020
Welcome to GGD rotation student Kuang-Tse Wang. His rotation, during the COVID-19 shutdown, is bound to be an adventure for all of us.
